2022 Momento Chenin Blanc - Verdelho, Western Cape, South Africa
Momento’s Chenin Blanc-Verdelho brings together 66% Chenin Blanc and 34% Verdelho from distinctive old-vine sites across the Western Cape. The Chenin comes from 43-year-old, dry-farmed bush vines on decomposed granite in the Swartland, while the Verdelho comes from Voor-Paardeberg and cooler Bot River vineyards rooted in granite, clay, and Bokkeveld shale. Winemaker Marelise Niemann whole-bunch presses the fruit, ferments with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak, and ages the wine for 10 months. Quince, white peach, grapefruit rind, green apple, hay, and wet stone lead into a textured, focused palate with a long, dry, pithy finish.
