"Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't."
— Anthony Bourdain

David Castleberry
Owner & Winemaker
Comptoir Wine Co. was founded by David Castleberry following an accomplished career in hospitality and wine, shaped by some of the industry's most demanding and influential environments.
David's path culminated in his recruitment by renowned sommelier and author Rajat Parr to lead the wine program at RN74, Michael Mina's flagship wine destination. His experience spans Michelin-starred restaurants, Five-Diamond resorts, intimate bistros, and boutique hotels—alongside hands-on work in wine production.
He passed the Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced Examination in 2012 and is a Certified Wine Educator. His work has been featured locally and nationally in The San Francisco Chronicle, Wine & Spirits, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and The Sommelier Journal, and he was named San Francisco's Rising Star Sommelier in 2016.
David's relaxed approach to wine and food belies a deep well of experience and knowledge. His philosophy is rooted in the belief that hospitality is a holistic, communal experience—one that extends beyond what's in the glass to include the artistry of the table, the intent behind the craft, and the stories of the people who make it possible.
Taste is personal. David takes the time to partner with producers who share his values: integrity, restraint, and a respect for place. That same sensibility guides the wines he makes and the bottles he curates.
When not in the cellar or at the table, David can be found reading, hiking, cooking, enjoying a good cigar, or chasing the perfect espresso.
