David Castleberry
Owner/Winemaker
David Castleberry is the founder of Comptoir Wine Co., a wine project shaped by decades on the restaurant floor and in the cellar. His career culminated in being recruited by renowned sommelier and author Rajat Parr to lead the wine program at RN74, the flagship wine destination of Michael Mina.
His experience spans Michelin-starred restaurants, Five-Diamond resorts, neighborhood bistros, and boutique hotels, with meaningful time spent in wine production. He passed the Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced Exam in 2012 and is a Certified Wine Educator.
Castleberry has been featured in The San Francisco Chronicle, Wine & Spirits Magazine, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and The Sommelier Journal, and was named San Francisco’s Rising Star Sommelier in 2016.
At the heart of his work is the belief that hospitality is communal and deeply human. His relaxed, unpretentious style reflects a conviction that wine is best understood through context—what’s on the table, the glass it’s poured into, and the people sharing it. Taste is personal, and Comptoir partners only with producers who share this philosophy of integrity, craft, and respect for place.
Outside of wine, he enjoys reading, hiking, cooking, cigars, and the ongoing pursuit of the perfect espresso.
