2009 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore, Tuscany, Italy

Ornellaia is one of the defining wines of Bolgheri, blending Bordeaux varieties from the estate’s coastal vineyards to combine Mediterranean richness with remarkable polish and freshness. The 2009, known as “L’Equilibrio,” is composed of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, with each variety and vineyard block vinified separately before 18 months of aging in barrique, 70% new French oak. The warm vintage produced a generous yet beautifully balanced wine, with blackberry, cassis, dark cherry, violet, tobacco, chocolate, balsamic herbs, and cedar carried by glossy tannins, lively acidity, and a long, refined finish.
