Masseto is one of Italy’s most celebrated Merlots, produced from a singular hillside near Bolgheri where dense Pliocene blue clay gives the wine its signature combination of power, richness, and polished structure. The hot 2009 growing season brought one of the earliest and fastest harvests in the estate’s history, with five separate lots picked between September 2 and 10 and vinified individually before blending. The wine is opulent yet remarkably fresh, showing blackberry, cassis, black cherry, violet, licorice, dark chocolate, tobacco, and exotic spice across a concentrated palate with glossy tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory mineral finish.
