2003 Domaine Francois Raveneau Les Clos, Chablis Grand Cru, France (chipped wax, slight stain)
Domaine François Raveneau is one of the defining producers of Chablis, and Les Clos is among the domaine’s rarest and most powerful wines, drawn from just 0.5 hectare of south-facing Chardonnay planted in 1963, 1976, and 1989. Rooted in classic Kimmeridgian limestone, the fruit is harvested by hand, gently pressed, and raised for roughly 18 months in mostly older oak barrels and feuillettes, building texture without obscuring the vineyard’s mineral character. The warm 2003 vintage produced an unusually opulent Les Clos, with ripe yellow orchard fruit, white peach, confit lemon, crème brûlée, warm spice, and wet stone across a deep, concentrated palate with impressive freshness and an exceptionally long finish.
